While lactic acid is suited to most skin types, Darden says some must proceed with caution. Is there anyone who should avoid lactic acid? “It can even add a little hydration back into the skin,” she says, given how lactic acids acts as a humectant, meaning it attract moisture to the skin. So if your skin errs on the side of sensitive, or you are keen to strengthen your skin as opposed to strip it (which you should be), making lactic acid your exfoliant of choice is a wise move. “Lactic acid is also less likely than glycolic or salicylic acid to disrupt the pH of your skin,” she notes, “keeping your natural moisture barrier healthy”. This is good news for those with sensitive skin, she says, who'll likely be able to tolerate lactic acid’s resurfacing effects much better than glycolic, or even retinol. “A larger molecule means that it cannot penetrate the skin as deeply, so you're getting more surface treatment” – think exfoliating and, ergo, brightening. “The lactic acid molecule is larger than other AHAs like glycolic acid or the beta hydroxy acid (BHA) salicylic acid,” explains Darden. How is lactic acid different to other AHAs? It’s how the ingredient differs to the others that dictates what – and who – it's best for. Like other AHAs such as glycolic, mandelic and citric, lactic acid can be found in a variety of skincare products from toners to exfoliators and serums. “Lactic acid is a water-soluble Alpha Hydroxy Acid that exfoliates the surface of the skin to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion,” explains Shani Darden, one of Hollywood’s favourite facialists and formulator of her eponymous skincare line. But the lesser used lactic acid might actually be what your skin is crying out for. But for the first two weeks I did apply morning and night and I think that really helped to calm the spots down. When you think about alpha hydroxy acids, otherwise known as AHAs, glycolic acid might first come to mind – or to hand, in one of your skincare products. ![]() I do prefer to apply it at night only if I’m putting on a lot of makeup as I have found if putting on heavy makeup it sometimes goes a bit odd in patches. I’m not sure if this is a result of the cleanser with the gel or mostly because of the gel, but I’m going to repurchase both! It leaves my skin feeling lovely in the morning. If I do get any they calm down and usually disappear by the next time. After 3 weeks I hardly have any spots around my jaw/neckline. It’s definitely helping to add to the amazing results from the gel. ![]() After a week or so of using the gel, I went away for a weekend and took the cleanser. I initially only used the flawless neutralising gel (which gave me almost overnight results and stops hormonal acne spots before they become those horrible ones that take weeks to disappear). "I suffer from hormonal acne on and under my jawline with some on my chin too. This really was my last shot before going to the doctors and getting a prescription. I had my lips blushed (tattoo) shortly after the ‘before’ which is why it looks like I have a lot of makeup on! I’m recommending the gel to all my friends who have hormonal acne. Normally by now I’d be in the middle of a big flare up but I can go out without any foundation on now! I do have a little tint on my face in the after pictures but nothing heavy. But for the first two weeks I did apply morning and night and I think that really helped to calm the spots down.
